The Restore the Montgomery Canal! appeal has now raised £163,000 of the £250,000 target it set itself.
The money will be put towards the next stage of the restoration: ‘Closing the Shropshire Gap’. (For a summary of this project, please see here.)
The appeal was particularly appreciative of a £25,000 legacy from the estate of David Gibson. In the 1970s, he was the Honorary Secretary of IWA’s London and Home Counties Branch and he was one of those who successfully fought to prevent Paddington Basin being filled in. Latterly, he was much involved with the restoration of the Northern Reaches of the Lancaster Canal.
Donations to the appeal can be made here or by sending a cheque (payable to Restore the Montgomery Canal) to Tixall Lodge, Tixall, Stafford, ST18 0XS.
Further information about leaving a legacy can be obtained from the Society’s Honorary Treasurer at Bryn Estyn, East Street, Llangollen LL20 8RB or by emailing treasurer@shropshireunion.org.uk.
The Restore the Montgomery Canal! Appeal group is promoted by the Montgomery Waterways Restoration Trust (and its membership arm The Friends of the Montgomery Canal), supported by the Shropshire Union Canal Society and The Inland Waterways Association’s Shrewsbury District & North Wales Branch.
