In collaboration with Canal and River Trust (CRT), the Society will benefit from a further UK Shared Prosperity Fund grant of £250K, including match funding, for the current year to March 2026. Of this, £140K will be used for continued restoration of the Montgomery Canal by the Society’s volunteers including towpath resurfacing, environmental works and further channel restoration. The grant will also fund significant repairs to Aston Lock hut enabling it to be used as a base for volunteers working on this length. The balance of £110K will be utilised by CRT for ongoing repairs at their historic Ellesmere Yard facility. We are very grateful to the funders for their support which will enable rapid progress to continue closing the Shropshire Gap – the last two miles of unrestored canal in Shropshire.
