The Society has a long history of enhancement work as evidenced by over sixty mooring and amenity sites all around the SU system. The society now has monthly work parties, both on and off the water, operating from our base in the historic Ellesmere Yard. So come along and contribute your energy and skills to this group of SUCS volunteers!
When: The sessions are at Ellesmere on the very popular Llangollen Canal, usually on the third Saturday of the month. Please check the work party schedule for confirmation of dates.
Where: The meeting point is the Canal and River Trust Ellesmere Yard on Birch Road. Please click here for a map.
What we do: Land-based tasks include painting of canal-side features, hedge and tree planting, weeding and planting gardens, litter-clearance, repairing towpaths and a variety of other tasks depending on the season and what’s most needed. On the water we do offside vegetation clearance using a CRT workboat and renovation of the mooring and amenity sites in the wider Ellesmere area.
How does it work: On arrival, the Society’s Enhancement Leader will run through what’s to be done that day, assign tasks and demonstrate the safe use of any equipment. He will also help make sure the task is suited to your skills and ability and be around throughout the session to provide help and advice. The sessions start at 0930 and we aim to wind up by 1530. Volunteers can choose when they work within those times – it’s up to you!
What do I need: Suitable outdoor clothing you don’t mind getting a bit mucky. Some sturdy shoes are advisable as is waterproof clothing or sunscreen where necessary. For full day sessions bring a packed lunch and drinks. We provide all tools and materials.
How do I sign up: Get in touch with David Carter on 01244 661440 or email dcartersucs@gmail.com.
This is a great way to get active, meet new people and do something really worthwhile. And what a venue – the middle of beautiful and historic Ellesmere on the most popular canal in the country!
