Shropshire Union Canal Society is restarting enhancement work

The society has a long history of enhancement work as evidenced by over sixty mooring and amenity sites all around the SU system. After a number of years absence, the society is recommencing enhancement work. So come along and contribute your energy and skills to the new group of SUCS volunteers!

When: The first session will be at Ellesmere on the very popular Llangollen Canal on Saturday 13th May, 2023. From June onwards, further sessions will be at the same location on the third Saturday of each month.

Where: The meeting point is the ‘White Bridge’ opposite the historic canal yard. Please click here for a map.

What we will be doing: The tasks will vary but can include painting of canal-side features, hedge-planting, weeding and planting gardens, litter-clearance from land and water, repairing towpaths and a variety of other tasks depending on what’s most needed in that area. Among the first tasks will be renovating the mooring and amenity sites in the Ellesmere area.

How does it work: On arrival, the society’s Enhancement Leader will run through what’s to be done that day, assign tasks and demonstrate the safe use of any equipment. He will also help make sure the task is suited to your skills and ability and be around throughout the session to provide help and advice. The sessions start at 0930 and we aim to wind up by 1530. Volunteers can choose when they work within those times – it’s up to you!

What do I need: Suitable outdoor clothing you don’t mind getting a bit mucky. Some sturdy shoes are advisable as is waterproof clothing or sunscreen where necessary. For full day sessions bring a packed lunch and drinks. We provide all tools and materials.

How do I sign up: Get in touch with David Carter on 01244 661440 or email dcartersucs@gmail.com.

This is a great way to get active, meet new people and do something really worthwhile. And what a venue – the middle of beautiful and historic Ellesmere on the most popular canal in the country!
