Helen Morgan MP Visits Site

Helen Morgan, M.P. for North Shropshire, recently made a fact-finding visit to the Society’s current restoration site on the Montgomery Canal near Crickheath. Also visiting was Councillor Roy Aldcroft, Deputy Portfolio Holder – Communities, Culture, Leisure & Tourism at Shropshire Council.

Joining them were Clare Parsons Canal & River Trust Enterprise Manager, John Dodwell chair of the Montgomery Canal Partnership and Michael Limbrey chair of the Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust.

Briefings explained more about the Society, its works and future plans plus the wider picture of Montgomery Canal restoration both sides of the border. The party went on to view the massive reconstruction currently underway and also the site of the next project. This will continue restoration southwards, once the current works finish later this year. All visitors were very impressed by the award-winning engineering being delivered by the Society.

Helen Morgan commented “The reconnection of the Montgomery Canal to the Welsh section currently undergoing Levelling Up funded restoration would be very beneficial to a wide section of North Shropshire and good joined up government investment”

Roy Aldcroft  Deputy Portfolio Holder – Communities, Culture, Leisure & Tourism said “I am very impressed with the work of the volunteers and the use of modern technology in restoring this important heritage site.”
