The Shropshire Union Canal Society would like to wish everyone that supports us in whatever way a happy and peaceful New Year.
There are more ways than ever to enjoy the canals in our area in 2026. Hire a boat, join a paddlesport club, visit the canalside nature reserves, investigate the industrial heritage or walk the continually improving towpath. Get your hands dirty and meet new people by joining one of our work parties at Crickheath or Ellesmere – see here for more details.
2026 is a special year for the Society as it celebrates the 60th anniversary of its founding “to protect and enhance the canals of the historic Shropshire Union system” – starting with the 1969 campaign to stop the Montgomery Canal being filled in to accommodate a Welshpool relief road. A programme of special celebratory events is planned through the year and more details will follow.
In spite of our many successes, it is an uncertain time for our canals with threats from lower funding, climate change and infrastructure failure. It has never been more important to demonstrate the benefits of a flourishing system and the popular support there is for it.
We look forward to a successful year for us all.
